Released on May 25, 1992, “Boot-Scootin’ Boogie” was recorded by American country music duo Brooks & Dunn. It was the duo’s fourth release at the same time their fourth consecutive no. 1 single. Ronnie Dunn penned the song while Don Cook and Scott Hendricks produced it for Arista Nashville Records.
Before it was officially released by the duo, fellow country music band Asleep at the Wheel recorded it first in 1990. It was one of the songs from their album Keepin’ Me Up Nights. Also, it was earlier included by Brooks & Dunn on their first album, Brand New Man, in 1991.
Furthermore, “Boot-Scootin’ Boogie” was a breakthrough in Brooks & Dunn’s career. It was highly received by country music fans around the world and has become a staple song of line dancing. It debuted at no. 73 on the country charts.
True enough, it went all the way to no. 1 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart on August 23, 1992. Meanwhile, it placed no. 50 on the Billboard Hot 100. In Canada, it also peaked at no. 1 on the RPM Country Tracks.Ronnie Dunn conceived “Boot-Scootin’ Boogie” as a tribute to the honky-tonk line dancing which is in Texas style. Popular in country bars, the song’s signature line dance is about a hardworking man who wants to unwind at his favorite honky-tonk bar and dance.
The association of the song and line dancing started when Bill Bader, a choreographer, noticed the title “Boot-Scootin’ Boogie” on the album of Asleep at the Wheel. He thought that the song suits well with a good dance. Later, he came up with the dance and began teaching it in Vancouver, Canada. There, the dance was called and known as “Vancouver Boogie.”
The U.S. was not spared as it spread to American folks who eventually loved it. Becoming a popular dance, bars of any kind also started offering line dancing lessons as a service. Soon, it became one of the top dances in American history. Also, “Boot-Scootin’ Boogie” is one of the songs that can make us want to dance.
