About The Song

John Anderson and Lionel Delmore collaborated on the composition of the song “Swingin.” Swingin’s 1983 debut on John Anderson’s album Wild and Blue was a big success, where it debuted at no 71 on US Billboard Hot Country Singles.

The song then reached its pinnacle at No. 1 on the US Billboard Hot Country Songs chart and No. 43 on the US Billboard Hot 100 in the same year. Due to the massive success of his 1994 album Country til’ I Die, he made the decision to record it again for this reason. However, he only released it as a B-side at the time.

Swingin is a song about a man’s love story that takes the listener back to his early years when he first fell in love with a girl named Charlotte Johnson. The scenario developed when they sat down on the front porch swing, where their blossoming romance flourished, and they fell in love that moment forward.

There is no doubt that Swingin is one of John Anderson’s songs that has played a significant role in his career. And he is extremely thankful to have recorded and co-written it. He even said in an interview that, Swingin’ is the type of song that sort of transports us back to where we were back then, and it gives us that nostalgic and wonderful feeling.

Since the song was so catchy, groovy, and so popular, some new young listeners today still know every word of its lyrics. That’s why it is plausible to conclude that Swingin succeeded in keeping John Anderson relevant for so many years.

Even other musicians continue to do covers of the song; the most current was performed by The Mavericks in 2019 for a digital download single.

Lyrics

There’s a little girl in our neighborhood
Her name is Charlotte Johnson
And she’s really lookin’ good, I had to go and see her
So I called her on the phone
I walked over to her house and this was going on
Her brother was on the sofa eatin’ chocolate pie
Her mama was in the kitchen cuttin’ chicken up to fry
Her daddy was in the backyard rollin’ up a garden hose
I was on the porch with Charlotte feelin’ love down to my toes
And we were swingin’ (swingin’)
Yeah, just a-swingin’ (swingin’)
Little Charlotte she’s as pretty as the angels when they sing
I can’t believe I’m out here on her front porch in this swing
A-swingin’ (swingin’)
Yeah, and we were swingin’ (swingin’)
Yeah, just a-swinging (swingin’)
Little Charlotte she’s as pretty as the angels when they sang
I can’t believe I’m out here on the front porch in the swing
A-swingin’ (swingin’)
Now Charlotte she’s the darlin’, she’s the apple of my eye
And when I’m on the swing with her, shemakes me almost high
Charlotte is my lover, she has been since the spring
Just can’t believe it started on her front porch in this swing
We were swingin’ (swingin’)
Yeah, just a-swingin’ (swingin’)
Little Charlotte she’s as pretty as the angels when they sang
I can’t believe I’m out here on the front porch in the swing
A-swangin’ (swingin’)
I said, little Charlotte she’s as pretty as the angels when they sang
I can’t believe I’m out here on her front porch in the swing
A-swangin’ (swingin’)
(Swingin’)
