About The Song

“House of Love” is a duet by Christian pop singer Amy Grant and country artist Vince Gill, released in November 1994 as the second single from Grant’s album House of Love on A&M Records. It peaked at No. 5 on the US Billboard Adult Contemporary chart and reached No. 37 on the Billboard Hot 100.

The song was recorded in Nashville, produced by Keith Thomas, with Grant on lead vocals and Gill adding harmony. The track runs 4:50 and was part of an album that hit No. 13 on the Billboard 200 and topped the Top Contemporary Christian chart, marking a blend of pop and Christian themes.

The lyrics explore the enduring nature of love, with lines like “Well, I bet you any amount of money, he’ll be coming back to you.” Written by Wally Wilson, Kenny Greenberg, and Greg Barnhill, the song conveys a message of hope and resilience, reflecting Grant’s signature style, enhanced by Gill’s country influence.

Two versions were recorded: one by Keith Thomas and another by Michael Omartian, with the latter featuring a hip-hop lilt and released on the 2024 30th anniversary expanded edition. The original video shoot in 1993 marked the beginning of Grant and Gill’s friendship, which later turned romantic.

Upon release, “House of Love” enjoyed moderate success, also charting at No. 9 on Canada’s RPM Adult Contemporary chart. The song’s legacy grew as it played over the closing credits of the 1994 film Speechless, starring Michael Keaton and Geena Davis, boosting its visibility.

Grant and Gill, both married to others at the time, met during Gill’s 1993 Christmas special and bonded during the recording sessions. Their relationship evolved after their respective divorces in 1998 and 1999, leading to their marriage in 2000, making the song a notable milestone in their personal and professional journey.

The track has been celebrated for its duet chemistry, with videos in black-and-white and color versions directed by Marcus Nispel and Jim Shea, respectively. It remains a fan favorite, often revisited in their joint performances.

Lyrics

Well, I bet you any amount of money
He’ll be coming back to you
Oh, I know there ain’t no doubt about it
Sometimes life is funny
You think you’re in your darkest hour
When the lights are coming on in the house of love
Oh, house of love
You’ve been up all night
Thinking it was over
He’s been out of sight
At least for the moment
But when something this strong
Oh, Gets a hold on you
The odds are ninety-nine to one
It’s got a hold on him too
Well, I bet you any amount of money
He’ll be coming back to you
Oh, I know there ain’t no doubt about it
Sometimes life is funny
You think you’re in your darkest hour
When the lights are coming on in the house of love
When the lights are coming on in the house of love
Now when the house is dark
And you’re all alone inside
You’ve gotta listen to your heart
And put away your foolish pride
Though the storm is breaking
And thunder shakes the walls
Love with a firm foundation
Ain’t never, never, never gonna fall
Well, I bet you any amount of money
He’ll be coming back to you
Oh, I know there ain’t no doubt about it
Sometimes life is funny
You think you’re in your darkest hour
When the lights are coming on in the house of love
Though the storm is breaking
And thunder shakes the walls
Love with a firm foundation
Ain’t never, never, never gonna fall
Well, I bet you any amount of money
He’ll come back to you
Oh, I know there ain’t no doubt about it
Sometimes life is funny
You think you’re in your darkest hour
When the lights are coming, lights are coming on
Well, I bet you any amount of money, baby
He’ll be coming back to you
Back to you, back to you
Oh, I know there ain’t no doubt about it
Sometimes life is funny
You think you’re in your darkest hour
When the lights are coming on in the house of love
Oh, yeah
Oh, I know there ain’t no doubt about it
Sometimes life is funny
You think you’re in your darkest hour
When the lights are coming on in the house of love
