Everything happens for a reason, which was certified by Garth Brooks’ “The Dance” chart-topping hit. Also known as the country star’s signature song became the country star’s ticket to stardom and made a name in the music industry.
According to the popular singer-songwriter Tony Arata, “The Dance” was meant to be recorded by Garth Brooks because of how its history began. In 1989, the country icon included it on his self-titled album but did you know that no one wanted to release the song before Brooks did?
The iconic song is the work of Arata, who composed “The Dance” as his masterpiece. It was inspired by the character of Kathleen Turner from the film Peggy Sue Got Married. Turner’s character had a moment of truth in the story where she realized that no one gets to pick and choose the memories she has in her life. She also had an eye-opener where she can’t alter a scene in her life without changing other aspects.
With a compelling storyline, the composer expected it to be accepted by any record label. However, that was not the case. Nashville-based music publisher Don Tolle helped Arata pitch to country music’s biggest record labels, but no one wanted the song. They were turned down countless times, and after three years, came across a newcomer who asked for the music to be sung himself.
Garth Brooks and Arata met at the famous Bluebird Cafe in Nashville. The former asked permission, and the latter agreed to record the track once he got signed on a record label. Keeping his promise, the record became a hit, and the rest is history.
Again, the songwriter Tony Arat cannot imagine anyone else singing his song, and fans couldn’t agree more. The funny thing was Arat didn’t recognize it initially because Brooks and his producer Allen Reynolds changed the intro to a melodious piano inspired by a montage Brooks and his wife had seen in a theater the night before the singer’s official recording.
The song held the throne as the No. 1 piece for three straight weeks and won accolades in prestigious music awards such as at the 1991 Academy of Country Music Awards for Song of the Year and Music Video of the Year. Plus, the song bagged Music Video of the Year at the Country Music Association Awards in the same year. This has followed the success of other Garth Brooks’ songs.
