About The Song

There have been numerous country music singers whose first shot at working together became an instant success. It was in 1984 when country music singers Merle Haggard and Janie Fricke first agreed to record a song together. The resulting single of their initial team-up was called “A Place to Fall Apart.” Haggard co-wrote the song with Willie Nelson and Freddy Powers. It was the second single from Haggard’s album It’s All in the Game. For a week, the record occupied the top spot of the country chart.

Haggard and Fricke’s follow-up duet record, “Natural High” was also a chart-topper. Just like in the song “A Place to Fall Apart,” Fricke provided backing vocals in the recording of the latter. This success further strengthened the recording partnership of Haggard and Fricke. Meanwhile, the album containing both songs was equally successful. Completing the three No. 1 hits it spawned was the song “Let’s Chase Each Other Around the Room.” To emphasize, the album helped revitalize Haggard’s career and brought it to higher acclaim in the ’80s. Apart from topping the Country Albums chart, the record also received a favorable review. Haggard’s ability to deliver an emotionally compelling record has been well regarded through his album It’s All in the Game.

Lyrics

I’ll probably never see you eye to eye again
This letter’s meant to be my last farewell
But you need to under-stand I’m nearly crazy
You need to know my life has gone to hell
Write me back and tell me why it ended
Send a letter that I can show my heart
I’ll be somewhere between “I love you” and what you’re feeling now
Lookin’ for a place to fall apart
Looking for a place to fall apart
Trying to find a place that I can leave my heart
I need to be somewhere hidin’ when I feel the teardrops start
Lookin’ for a place to fall a-part
I can’t seem to justify your leavin’ me
I’m be-wildered as to how it all came down
I thought everything was fine until your phone call
The call that turned my world around
Send me word and tell me why it ended
I need some final proof to show my heart
I’ll be somewhere between “I love you” and what you’re feelin’ now (I love you)
Lookin’ for a place to fall apart
Looking for a place to fall apart
Trying to find a place that I can leave my heart
I need to be somewhere hidin’ when I feel the teardrops start
Lookin’ for a place to fall a-part
Looking for a place to fall apart
Trying to find a place that I can leave my heart
I need to be somewhere hidin’ when I feel the teardrops start
Lookin’ for a place to fall a-part
